The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has unveiled its master plan for 10 ring roads. The plan proposes linking Mumbai and its surrounding areas through an integrated network of roads, tunnels, sea links and expressways. According to the authority, it marks an important shift from building standalone transport projects to planning transport facilities as part of an interconnected network in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
The MMRDA said Mumbai's transport system has so far been shaped by the geography of the region, with most travel concentrated on a relatively narrow north-south corridor. The new master plan aims to create several interconnected routes across the wider metropolitan region, giving commuters alternative ways to reach different parts of the MMR.
The 10 ring roads will bring together many infrastructure projects that are existing, under way and proposed. The network will include main roads, tunnels, sea routes and expressways. The authority said it looks at the Mumbai Metropolitan Region as a single, interconnected transport network rather than treating each project as a separate intervention.
One of the main aims of the master plan is to give motorists several travel options across the region. The MMRDA said that by linking roads with tunnels, sea routes and expressways, it wants to provide alternatives to existing routes and reduce dependence on the limited number of major north-south corridors. The authority also clarified that the aim is not merely to build more roads, but to create a network in which traffic moves more efficiently and smoothly across the region.
The authority said reducing travel time and improving the overall travel experience are at the centre of the plan. "Because the objective is not merely to build more roads. It is to make travel faster, more reliable and more accessible," the MMRDA said. It presented saving time for those travelling between different parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region as a key outcome of a more integrated transport network.
According to the MMRDA, the 10 ring road plan will include facilities already in operation as well as projects under construction and planned ones. The idea is that the different road projects will work together as part of a wider regional network instead of operating independently. The master plan could therefore offer a broad framework for linking Mumbai's expanding road infrastructure with connectivity projects across the metropolitan region.
The MMRDA has described the initiative as a long-term mobility vision for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, centred on connectivity and diversity of routes. The authority summed up the plan as: 10 ring roads, many options and one connected Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The announcement comes as roads, tunnels, sea links and expressways are expanding rapidly in and around Mumbai, making integration between projects a growing part of regional transport planning.
