The decision to shift 265 international flights from Mumbai airport to Navi Mumbai airport has been put off for now. The shifting was to begin by 25 October, but it has now been put on hold. Passengers planning to travel abroad on flights from Mumbai airport should take note.
Earlier, it had been decided to move more than 200 international flights from Mumbai airport to Navi Mumbai airport.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has asked Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) to sit down with airlines and other stakeholders and prepare a new plan. The plan will be sent forward only after consensus is reached. Any decision to move flights from Mumbai airport to Navi Mumbai will therefore be taken only once all parties agree.
The reason for the proposed move was the redevelopment work under way at Terminal 1 of Mumbai airport. The decision to send international flights to Navi Mumbai was also meant to keep growing crowds at Terminal 2 under control. MoCA has now stopped MIAL from taking forward the plan to shift international flights.
Passengers planning to catch an international flight from Mumbai airport are advised to keep track of every new update from their airline to avoid any inconvenience. Further information on shifting flights may emerge only after the new plan is finalised.
Until consensus is reached on the new plan, the earlier plan to begin shifting by 25 October will not go ahead. What happens next will be decided only after talks with airlines and other stakeholders.
