Boxer Mary Kom, an Olympic medallist, is currently taking part in 'Bigg Boss 20'. A major development in her personal life has now emerged. Her former husband, Onler, has initiated criminal defamation proceedings against her.
Onler alleges that Mary Kom made defamatory remarks about him on various television programmes and in interviews. He has taken the step under Section 356 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The relationship between Mary Kom and Onler has long been in the public eye, and the dispute has now taken a legal turn.
Mary Kom is said to have allegedly made derogatory remarks about Onler first on a television show and later in other forums. Onler had been considering legal action since then.
Onler has acknowledged that he is pursuing the matter, but declined to say much because it is before a court. "My case is strong. I trust the Indian justice system. The matter is currently in court, so I will not say anything more on it," he said. The next hearing in the case is reportedly on November 19.
Mary Kom had earlier accused Onler of financial misconduct on the programme 'Aap Ki Adalat'. She claimed that Onler defrauded her of crores of rupees earned from her boxing career. She also said that loans were taken in her name, her property was mortgaged, and some assets were transferred to Onler's name without her consent. Onler has repeatedly denied the allegations. He has also challenged Mary Kom to prove them.
Their love story began in Delhi in 2000. Onler was then studying at the Department of Law at Delhi University. On her way to a tournament, Mary Kom lost her luggage and Onler helped her. The two became friends, and the friendship later turned into love.
They married in 2005. They had twin sons in 2007 and another son was born in 2013. In 2018 they adopted a daughter. Onler put his own career on hold for some time to support Mary Kom's boxing career and look after the children. Mary Kom has six World Championship titles and an Olympic bronze medal to her name.
After speculation about their separation, Mary Kom clarified in 2023 that the two had been divorced under traditional customary law.
