India's electric car market is expanding rapidly. Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Honda and Hyundai are preparing to bring out new electric vehicles, including a 3-row electric MPV for families, a premium electric SUV and compact electric SUVs. Their arrival could give buyers more electric car options across different budgets.

Maruti Suzuki's YMC could be the company's first electric MPV. The 3-row model is being tested and its base is expected to be linked to the e-Vitara. If so, the company could benefit from its existing electric car development. The vehicle is likely to offer a large cabin, plenty of space for families and features useful for daily commutes. It could become an electric alternative to MPVs such as the Maruti Ertiga and XL6.

A Toyota vehicle based on the same model is also likely to follow. The YMC's range, battery and price have not yet been disclosed. It could launch in late 2026 or in 2027.

Tata Motors is preparing an electric version of its flagship Safari SUV. The Safari EV is expected to launch in the 2026 festive season. It could be the company's first 3-row electric SUV. Its design and powertrain are likely to be linked to the Harrier EV. It could come with 65 kWh and 75 kWh battery packs, with rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive options. With the larger battery, the range is estimated to exceed 500 km. Features such as a triple-screen dashboard, Level 2 ADAS and a 540-degree camera are likely. The possible starting price is Rs 22.5 lakh.

The Honda 0 Alpha will be the company's first fully electric car being readied for India. The compact electric SUV was shown as a concept at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show. It is now being tested in India. The plan is to build it at the company's Tapukara production plant in Rajasthan, and an investment of about Rs 1,200 crore is expected for the project. The car will emphasise efficient use of space, low weight and modern technology. Its global entry is expected in 2027. Details of battery, range and price have not yet emerged.

The fourth vehicle is the Hyundai HE1i, a compact electric SUV being developed for markets such as India. It is likely to make its debut by March 2027. It will be produced in India and could come in two versions, standard range and long range. A new infotainment system and Level 2 driver assistance technology are also expected. It could compete with the Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV 3XO EV and Kia Syros EV.

Overall, both the Honda 0 Alpha and the Hyundai HE1i electric SUVs could arrive in 2027. For the success of these four new electric cars, real-world range, charging time and price will matter most.
