Rising petrol and diesel prices are pushing more Indian buyers towards CNG cars, and Maruti Suzuki's Ertiga MPV has been a direct beneficiary. According to August 2026 sales data, the Ertiga CNG has once again claimed the title of the country's number one CNG car, with 13,352 units sold during the month.

The 7-seater, designed for larger families, saw a slight dip of about 1 percent compared to the 13,447 units sold in August 2025, but the 13,352 units sold this year are still being seen as a significant milestone. Affordable pricing, ample space and strong mileage are cited as the main reasons behind the Ertiga's popularity.

The Ertiga CNG is powered by a 1.5-litre K15C smart hybrid petrol-CNG engine. On CNG mode, the engine produces 87 bhp and 121.5 Nm of torque, paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox for a smooth driving experience. The car returns a mileage of 26.11 km per kg, which stands out in this segment.

Safety has not been compromised either. The Ertiga comes with 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and rear parking sensors. The car's ex-showroom price starts at around Rs 8,90,000.

Besides the Ertiga, several other models put up strong performances in the top 10 CNG cars list for August 2026. The Maruti Suzuki Dzire, in second place, recorded a 26 percent year-on-year rise with 12,963 units sold. The Maruti Suzuki WagonR, in third place, saw sales rise 34 percent to 9,405 units.

The Tata Punch, in fourth place, posted the biggest jump with a 102 percent year-on-year increase, selling 7,767 units. The Maruti Suzuki Brezza, in fifth place, recorded a 31 percent rise with 7,608 units sold, while the recently launched Maruti Suzuki Victoris made an immediate mark in sixth place with 6,833 units sold.

The Hyundai Aura, in seventh place, saw sales rise 34 percent to 6,485 units, while the Tata Nexon, in eighth place, recorded a 40 percent rise to 6,178 units. The Maruti Suzuki Eeco, in ninth place, grew 20 percent to 6,107 units, and the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, in tenth place, posted a sharp 95 percent rise to 6,024 units sold.
