A 37-year-old brick kiln worker, detained on charges of strangling his four-month-pregnant wife, died by suicide at the station on Monday evening, raising questions over police supervision.
A shocking incident took place at the Nanded Rural police station on Monday, November 2, at about 7 pm. A man detained on the charge of strangling his four-month-pregnant wife hanged himself in the station's toilet, according to information available. The incident has caused a stir in the police department.
The accused is Sushil Mahajan Haibate, 37, a resident of Mudkhed. He worked at a brick kiln at Dhanegaon in Nanded district. He is accused of strangling his four-month-pregnant wife, Chhaya, out of suspicion.
According to the information available, the crime took place around midnight. The accused then told Diksha, Chhaya's sister, who also worked at the kiln, that Chhaya was not waking up and was lying on the cot. He also said she was not speaking.
On hearing this, Diksha rushed with her husband to the adjoining room. There Chhaya was found dead. The incident created a sensation across the area.
Police reached the spot on receiving the news. In the initial inquiry, suspicion was expressed that Sushil was behind the killing of his wife. Nanded Rural police then registered a case and took him into custody. He had been detained in the morning, and he died within a few hours.
A mood of grief prevailed in the area over the death of the pregnant woman. Chhaya Haibate was cremated late on Monday night, November 2, in her parental family's ancestral village in Umri taluka.
Following the accused's death at the station, serious questions are being raised about police supervision. It is being asked exactly how he was being watched while at the station, whether he was kept under watch when he was allowed to use the toilet, and what the police personnel concerned were doing when the incident happened.
The administration is responsible for the safety of any person in police custody. A thorough inquiry into the case is therefore considered necessary. Attention is on whether there was any lapse in supervision and on what emerges about the circumstances of the incident.
On one side is the grave case of the killing of a pregnant wife, and on the other the accused's suicide in the police station. Both have stirred Nanded. Only further investigation will make clear the true circumstances behind the incident.
