Virat Kohli reached the landmark in the first ODI against New Zealand at Eden Park, after Rohit Sharma fell for one in the opening over of India's chase of 185.
The first match of the five-match ODI series between India and New Zealand is under way at Eden Park in Auckland. India won the toss and asked New Zealand to bat first.
Virat Kohli has added another major record to his name in the match. He is the first batter to complete 13,000 runs at No. 3 in one-day cricket.
India did not make a good start, however. Chasing the 185 set by New Zealand, Rohit Sharma was dismissed for one run in the very first over. Kohli then came in at No. 3 and reached the new milestone.
After Sachin Tendulkar, Kohli is the first player to score 13,000 or more runs while batting at a single position. Kohli has batted at No. 3 in 251 innings out of 254 ODIs so far, scoring more than 13,000 runs in those innings at an average of 61.
Besides Kohli, the only other player to score 10,000 or more runs at No. 3 is Australia's Ricky Ponting. Kumar Sangakkara is third on the list with 9,747 runs. South Africa's Jacques Kallis is fourth with 7,774 runs, and New Zealand's Kane Williamson is fifth with 6,504 runs.
The ranking of batters with the most ODI runs at No. 3 is: Virat Kohli (India) 13,005 runs, Ricky Ponting (Australia) 12,662, Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka) 9,747, Jacques Kallis (South Africa) 7,774 and Kane Williamson (New Zealand) 6,504. Kohli's figure carries an asterisk because the match is still in progress.
Kohli will have a good chance to set several more records in this five-match series.
New Zealand's batting did not fare well. Indian bowlers bowled well and bundled the side out for 185. The New Zealand innings did not last the full 50 overs and ended in 40.2 overs.
Tim Seifert was New Zealand's top scorer with 38. Blair Tickner, who came in at No. 11, hit four sixes and added 34 runs. Glenn Phillips contributed 30.
