Indian bowlers dismissed New Zealand short of 50 overs in the first of five ODIs, leaving India a target of 186 to win.

Indian bowlers broke the back of New Zealand's batting in the first ODI between the two sides. India need 186 runs to win. The two teams are to play a five-match ODI series, and this is the first match.

New Zealand lost the toss and India asked them to bat first. The Kiwi side could not handle the Indian bowlers and failed to complete even 50 overs. Arshdeep Singh took four wickets. Gurnoor Brar and Anshul Kamboj took two each. Daryl Mitchell was run out by a brilliant throw from Rohit Sharma.

India's playing eleven for the match had four fast bowlers, and all four bowled superbly. Star spinner Kuldeep Yadav was left out of the side.

Early on, Naman Dhir dropped a catch of Tim Seifert in the fourth over, bowled by Akeb Nabi. But in the fifth over Shreyas Iyer made no mistake. Will Young missed an Arshdeep Singh delivery and Shreyas took the skied ball comfortably. Young made a quick 9. New Zealand were 22 for 1 after five overs.

India struck again in the powerplay. In the ninth over Arshdeep Singh dismissed Henry Nicholls, with Naman Dhir taking the catch. The score became 40 for 2. Daryl Mitchell came in to join Tim Seifert.

Anshul Kamboj bowled very accurately, giving away only 8 runs in his four overs. New Zealand captain Tom Latham was out for 3 off Gurnoor Brar's bowling. Gurnoor took a superb one-handed, left-handed catch off his own bowling. New Zealand lost their fourth wicket at 84.

Rohit Sharma then dived and threw to send Daryl Mitchell back to the pavilion. New Zealand were thus five down with fewer than 100 on the board. After 22 overs the score was 99/5. India had put New Zealand under full pressure.

Captain Mitchell Santner was also dismissed, bowled by Anshul Kamboj. Santner made 4 off 16 balls. After 27 overs the score was 113 for 6. Glenn Phillips stayed at the crease. Virat Kohli then took a brilliant catch at second slip off Anshul Kamboj to dismiss Nathan Smith (1). New Zealand were 115 for 7 in 28.3 overs.

Arshdeep Singh had Kyle Jamieson (1) caught by Virat Kohli at cover for New Zealand's eighth wicket. It was Arshdeep's third wicket of the match and the score was 135 for 8. New Zealand looked in trouble.

Arshdeep had Glenn Phillips (30) caught by Shreyas Iyer at mid-off. The score was 146 for 9 in 35.1 overs. It was Arshdeep's fourth wicket of the match. Duffy and Ticknor then put on a good partnership for the last wicket and kept New Zealand's hopes alive. The pair added 39 runs for the last wicket before Gurnoor Brar broke it.
