Shardiya Navratri begins on October 11. The last day of Navratri falls on October 19, and Dussehra will be celebrated on October 20.
Navratri begins with the ghatasthapana of the kalash at home. Many people use a copper kalash for this puja. The problem is that copper kalashes are not in daily use, so when one is suddenly brought out at festival time, it is found covered with a lot of grime.
Restoring such a blackened kalash to its original shine usually takes a lot of effort. But with the right, simple home trick, the kalash can be made to gleam like a mirror without much work.
The things needed are: one to two cups of vinegar, two to three spoons of salt, lemon juice, lemon peel, a cleaning solution or dishwashing liquid, and water.
To make the cleaning liquid, first take some water in a bowl. Add vinegar to it as required. Then add two to three spoons of salt and squeeze in the juice of one lemon. Once everything has dissolved well, add the cleaning solution or dishwashing liquid and mix again. The solution is now ready, and the copper kalash will be cleaned with it.
If the copper vessel has very stubborn stains, soak the vessel or kalash in this solution for an hour. Then rub gently with a scrubber and clean off all the accumulated grime. The solution loosens the black layer on the vessels by itself, so there is no need to apply much force.
Once the kalash is clean, it is also important to keep its shine. Wipe copper vessels thoroughly with a cotton cloth immediately after scrubbing. Make sure not a single drop of water remains on the vessel. If water stays on copper vessels for long, a green layer forms on them. On the other hand, if a vessel is dried and wiped at once and then put away, it does not turn black quickly.
