In a major shake-up in India's electric passenger vehicle (EV) segment in September, South Korean automaker Kia Motors has overtaken Maruti Suzuki, the country's largest carmaker.

According to the September sales report, Kia pushed ahead of Maruti in electric car sales and made it to the list of the top five companies. Maruti Suzuki has dropped out of the list.

Kia Motors sold a total of 1,263 electric cars across the country in September. Maruti Suzuki managed to sell only 1,103 electric vehicles in the same period. The gap between the two companies is just 160 units, but such a small difference has changed the market equation.

Kia's electric car sales rose 48 per cent, as the company had sold 851 units in August. Year on year (YoY), its sales grew a sharp 111 per cent. The figure for September 2025 was 598 units.

As a result, Kia's share of the Indian EV market has risen to 3.50 per cent, while Maruti's market share has fallen to 3.06 per cent.

The biggest factor behind the turnaround is the launch of Kia's new, affordable electric car, the Kia Syros EV. Before it arrived, apart from expensive imported models such as the EV6 and EV9, the Carens Clavis EV was Kia's only mass-market option.

The Syros EV was launched at a starting price of Rs 13.50 lakh, which drew customers towards Kia. The top model of the car costs up to Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom). It comes with two battery pack options.

The 42 kWh battery pack gives a range of up to 443 km on a single charge, while the 51.4 kWh pack gives a range of up to 526 km on a single charge.

Customers have liked the Syros EV for its attractive price and strong driving range, and this has given Kia a decisive lead over Maruti Suzuki.
