The Indian automobile market saw an interesting reversal in September. In the electric passenger vehicle (EV) segment, South Korean automaker Kia Motors overtook Maruti Suzuki, the country's largest carmaker.

According to the September sales report, Kia moved ahead of Maruti to enter the list of the top five companies in e-car sales, while Maruti Suzuki dropped out of the list.

Kia Motors sold a total of 1,263 electric cars across the country in September. Maruti Suzuki managed to sell only 1,103 electric vehicles in the same period. The gap between the two companies is just 160 units, but it has changed the market equation.

Kia's electric car sales rose 48 per cent, as the company had sold 851 units in August. On a year-on-year basis, its sales jumped 111 per cent. The figure was 598 units in September 2025.

As a result, Kia's share of the Indian EV market has risen to 3.50 per cent, while Maruti's market share has fallen to 3.06 per cent.

The biggest factor behind the reversal is the launch of Kia's new, affordable electric car, the Syros EV. Before it arrived, apart from expensive imported vehicles such as the EV6 and EV9, the Carens Clavis EV was Kia's only mass-market option.

The Syros EV was launched at an attractive starting price of Rs 13.50 lakh, which drew customers towards Kia. The top model costs up to Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom). It comes with two battery pack options.

The 42 kWh battery pack offers a range of up to 443 km on a single charge, while the 51.4 kWh pack offers up to 526 km.

Customers have liked the Syros EV for its attractive price and strong driving range. This gave Kia a decisive lead over Maruti Suzuki.
