Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's warning to BJP leaders in Pune is not seen as limited to the city. He stressed that party posts should be given on the basis of work, not lobbying or closeness to senior leaders. This signals an expectation of accountability from the BJP organisation across Maharashtra.

A meeting of party leaders was held in Pune on October 14. At it, Fadnavis expressed displeasure at the scramble for posts. He said elected representatives and office-bearers would have to show what they had contributed before asking for any post in the organisation or the government.

Though the meeting was in Pune, the same principle applies to BJP leaders in Nagpur, Mumbai, Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and other districts.

Competition for posts is common in political organisations. But when the race for office begins to outweigh groundwork, reaching voters and organisational responsibilities, the relationship between the party and its supporters can weaken. Fadnavis's emphasis on performance assessment and accountability points to this challenge. His stand means that a post is not a reward in itself but a responsibility that demands visible work and results.

One proposal reportedly under consideration is to assess the performance of MLAs, corporators and office-bearers and consider them for posts only afterwards. If applied consistently, this could show which leaders are active on the ground and which are focused only on acquiring influential posts. The success of such a system would depend on how performance is measured and whether uniform yardsticks are adopted across all districts and levels.

The message also has a practical side. Concern has been raised over voter registration for the upcoming graduates' and teachers' constituency elections. Election preparation does not happen through meetings and assurances alone. It needs sustained work in the field, coordination among local units and party workers reaching eligible voters.

It remains to be seen whether the message translates into a performance-based assessment system across the state. Its effect will be decided by the steps taken after this warning.
