The Election Commission on Thursday announced that a special summary revision (SSR) of electoral rolls will be carried out in 17 states and Union Territories. These include states where Assembly elections are due next year.
The Commission has sent a letter to the chief electoral officers of all these states and Union Territories, including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur and Goa. In the letter, the Commission said January 1, 2027 will be treated as the qualifying date.
The purpose of the special summary revision is to add the names of eligible voters to the rolls, especially young people and first-time voters. Entries in the electoral rolls will also be corrected, and the rolls made more accurate.
On the terms of the Assemblies, the term of the 403-member Uttar Pradesh Assembly ends on May 22 next year. The terms of the 60-member Manipur, 40-member Goa, 117-member Punjab and 70-member Uttarakhand Assemblies will end on different dates in March 2027.
