Itching or redness on the palms, curling fingers and swollen or rounded nails can point to liver disease, and early treatment is advised.

The liver is considered a vital organ. It performs the essential task of keeping protein, hormones and blood circulation in check. Looking after its health is therefore described as extremely important.

Changes in lifestyle, junk food and other health problems hamper the liver's functioning. When liver health deteriorates, clear signs begin to show on the skin, nails and hands. Instead of ignoring symptoms that appear early, getting timely treatment is advised. The symptoms described here are those that show up in the hands when the liver is damaged.

The first symptom is repeated itching or redness on the palms. This is not an ordinary symptom but a sign of liver disease, it is said. Toxins stay in the body instead of being flushed out, which leads to redness, itching and yellowing in the hands. Weakness in the palms could be a sign of conditions such as fatty liver, hepatitis or liver cirrhosis.

The second sign is fingers curling or stiffening. If the fingers are bending inward more than before, or the palms feel tight and hard, this should not be taken lightly. Such symptoms can appear in chronic liver disease or cirrhosis, and from heavy drinking. Similarly, if a nail turns completely white, or a red or pink line forms near the tip and in the middle of the nail, blood circulation may be obstructed. Changes in the nails point to the risk of liver disease.

The third symptom is swelling in the nails. Nail health deteriorates once liver disease sets in. If the nails swell, or look rounded, broad and puffy, people are advised to see a doctor immediately. These symptoms appear after long-standing liver disease. When the disease reaches its final stage, it gradually affects the nervous system, causing symptoms such as trembling and shaking of the hands. These symptoms should not be ignored and treatment should be sought in time.
