Pain on one side of the abdomen can stem from gas, constipation, appendicitis or kidney stones, and timely treatment is advised, according to the information given.

Most people ignore abdominal pain when it starts. Indigestion, acidity, gas and other digestive problems are said to cause it. Often the pain does not spread across the stomach but stays in one corner, with a feeling of pricking, tightness or pulling. Sudden, sharp cramps can come after eating or at any time. Growing pain should not be ignored, and treatment at the right time is advised. Four causes of pain in the right and left sides of the abdomen are listed below.

The first cause given is gas or indigestion. Constant changes in daily diet show quickly in health. Spicy, oily or stale food worsens indigestion. Gas trapped in the intestines can cause cramping pain on the right or left side of the abdomen. At times the stomach feels bloated, with a pricking pain in one spot. According to the information, if there is frequent belching, rumbling in the stomach and a feeling of heaviness, drinking warm water, or lukewarm water mixed with cumin powder, will help release the trapped gas.

The second cause is constipation, which is said to occur when stool is not passed from the intestines. If the stomach does not clear properly after waking in the morning, there can be pain or cramps on one side of the lower abdomen. Bloating, straining during a bowel movement and a feeling of pressure in the abdomen are signs that constipation may be recurring. Worsening constipation should not be ignored, and people are advised to consult a doctor and get treated in time. For relief, including fibre-rich foods in the diet and drinking plenty of water are recommended.

The third cause is the appendix. Pain in the lower right abdomen, whether sudden or building gradually, can be a symptom of appendicitis. It begins as pain around the navel and may then shift to the lower right. Pain also occurs if that spot is pressed while walking or coughing. The information says ignoring symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and fever can prove dangerous.

The fourth cause is stones, or kidney stones. When a kidney stone forms, there is pain on one side of the abdomen that may, over time, travel down to below the waist. With a stone, pain comes suddenly and on and off. Symptoms such as burning while urinating, frequent urination, nausea or blood in the urine can also appear. Drinking plenty of water regularly is advised to prevent stones.

The information also says it is for general awareness only and makes no claim of any treatment. People are advised to consult their doctor before trying any remedy.
