Veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan, known as the "Mahanayak" (superstar) of Bollywood, is celebrating his 84th birthday today, October 11. Through his powerful acting, deep voice and versatile personality, he has left his mark on the Indian film industry for more than five decades. Facing many ups and downs, he carved out a distinct place for himself in the world of entertainment. His popularity remains undiminished even today.

Bachchan was born on October 11, 1942, in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. His father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, was a well-known Hindi poet. Heir to a literary legacy, Bachchan graduated in science from Kirori Mal College in Delhi. He then went to Kolkata in search of a job, where he worked at a few companies. But he had a passion for acting, and it was this passion that brought him to the film industry.

Bachchan entered Hindi films in 1969 with "Saat Hindustani". The film, however, did not meet expectations at the box office. He had to go through many difficulties early in his career. His height and voice drew criticism. It is said that he was refused a job at All India Radio because of his voice.

There was also talk at the time that some actresses were unwilling to work with him because of his height. As a result, he had to let go of many opportunities in the early days. But the very voice that had earned him rejection went on to become his signature. His deep voice and forceful dialogue delivery made a distinct impact on audiences.

Audiences began to take notice of Bachchan with "Anand" in 1971, alongside Rajesh Khanna. His supporting role in the film was particularly noticed. "Zanjeer" in 1973 then proved a major turning point in his career. The character in that film set him on the path to great popularity.

"Deewaar" and "Sholay", both released in 1975, raised his popularity further. The hero who fought injustice and the impactful dialogues fixed Bachchan's "Angry Young Man" image in the minds of audiences.

Through films such as "Don", "Trishul", "Muqaddar Ka Sikandar", "Abhimaan", "Amar Akbar Anthony", "Laawaris", "Baghban", "Paa" and "Piku", Bachchan showed audiences different shades of his acting. He left his mark in every kind of film, from action and comedy to family drama and emotional roles.

Along with films, he also found success on the small screen. By hosting the popular programme "Kaun Banega Crorepati", he built a distinct bond with viewers. Changing with the times, he won over younger audiences as well.

In 2019, he was mentioned as having received the title "Megastar of the Century" based on votes in a survey by a radio channel. With decades of acting, numerous popular films and the love of audiences, Bachchan's name will always be remembered in the history of the Indian film industry.
