A part of the roof fell near the entrance to the ticket office at Central Railway's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) station in Mumbai on the night of Thursday, October 23, 2026. Two passengers were injured.

Both were taken to St George Hospital immediately after the incident and are being treated in its casualty department. The hospital's medical team is assessing their condition, and further tests are being carried out.

The injured are Vinayak Balu Hatkar and Ayan Naushad Matvankar. Hatkar, 28, lives in Ghatkopar. Matvankar, 24, lives in Sandhurst Road. They suffered different kinds of injuries.

Hatkar was hurt on the right side of the head, and the wound had to be stitched. Matvankar has an injury to the eyelid above his left eye and scratches on the back of his right shoulder and on his neck. His right ankle is swollen and painful.

Central Railway said the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) was carrying out work at the spot where the roof section fell. This has raised the question of whether adequate arrangements had been made for passenger safety where construction or repair work was under way.

CSMT is one of the busiest railway stations in Mumbai. Large numbers of people travel from here by local and long-distance trains, and thousands of passengers pass through the station every day. Where work is under way, it is therefore vital to give passengers a safe route, keep them away from danger zones and put the necessary safety measures in place.

The fall of a part of the roof at a crowded spot such as the ticket office gate is being treated as a serious matter. However, no official cause has yet emerged for the fall. It is also not clear whether the ongoing work had any connection with the incident, or whether the necessary safety arrangements were in place in the area. No official finding has been announced on this either.

The incident has highlighted the need to check safety at places in the station where construction or repair is going on. The condition of the injured passengers is being monitored. More information will be available only once the exact cause is established.
