The firing on actor Tiger Shroff on Sunday has caused alarm in Bollywood. Mumbai is considered a safe city, yet a well-known actor was targeted there. The incident has once again raised the question of celebrity safety.
Actresses Poonam Pandey, Neetu Chandra, Kunika Sadanand and Urvashi Rautela have expressed concern over the incident. All four hope the Mumbai Police will take strict action in the case.
Pandey said she could not believe the news at first. She was shocked on seeing videos of the youths suspected of the firing. According to her, the young men looked different from the goons seen in films. She was surprised that an actor as prominent as Shroff had been targeted.
Pandey went on to say that it is very frightening that a man returning home after playing football can be attacked. "Today we are safe, but there is no guarantee what happens in the next moment," she said. She expressed relief that Shroff is safe.
Asked about Lawrence Bishnoi, Pandey said: "One does feel afraid, no! We do not want to die like this. This incident is terrifying." She said there are security guards at events, but it is not possible to carry security everywhere. Artistes should therefore be more alert about their own safety, she said.
Chandra, too, first thought the news was false. She could not believe such an incident could happen in Mumbai. But after learning the full details, she began to feel afraid. According to Chandra, artistes in the entertainment world bring joy to people's faces, so their safety should be given equal importance. Artistes keep visiting malls, crowded places and public events, and the question of how safe it is to step out is now being raised.
Chandra expressed confidence in the Maharashtra Police. She hopes proper action will be taken in the case and that ordinary people will feel safe again. She also voiced concern for the safety of Shroff and his father, Jackie Shroff.
After the incident, Sadanand appealed to Bollywood artistes to speak up on issues of safety and law and order. Voicing support for the government, she said one should also think about what the government is doing for the safety of citizens and artistes. According to her, the safety of artistes, their families, friends and fans is important. It is also necessary to speak up for the safety of ordinary viewers who buy tickets to watch films, she said.
Rautela also expressed grief over the incident. She said her condolences are with Shroff and his family. She also hoped the administration would act as soon as possible.
After the firing on Shroff, a fresh discussion on the safety of artistes has begun in Bollywood. All eyes are now on the investigation and the police's further action.
