Rajgad police raided the Amrai Resort in Velu village of Bhor taluka in Pune district on October 22. In the alleged sex racket, police rescued 13 women. One man has been arrested, while the main accused in the case is absconding and police are searching for him.
The raid took place at around 6.30 pm. Police had earlier received a tip that women were being pushed into prostitution at the resort. According to the information available, this had been going on for about two months.
Before acting, police verified the tip by sending a decoy customer. Once the information was confirmed, a police team raided the resort and searched the entire premises.
Police said the women were being offered to customers at Rs 1,000 per woman. The 13 rescued women are from Mumbai, Thane, Delhi, West Bengal and Karnataka.
A case has been registered at Rajgad police station against Vaibhav Balaji Ingle and Raghu Shetty. One of the two has been arrested. Police believe the alleged mastermind of the racket is the one who is absconding, and efforts are on to trace him.
Police are also trying to find out who owns the resort and who was responsible for running it. They are also examining whether anyone else was involved in the alleged misuse of the premises. There is talk in the area that the resort is linked to an office-bearer of a political party, but police have not confirmed this.
The raid has caused a stir in Velu and the surrounding area. Further investigation is under way.
