Married couples in Maharashtra will no longer have to make repeated trips to a registration office to get a copy of their marriage certificate. The state's registration and stamps department has launched a new digital facility for this. Couples will not need to visit an office just to collect a copy.
The department has linked its marriage registration software to DigiLocker. As a result, people can view and download their official marriage certificate directly from the digital document platform. The certificates will carry a digital signature, which means everyone can keep a certified electronic copy that will remain useful later.
According to the department, the aim of the integration is to make access to marriage records easier. It also seeks to reduce the need to visit government offices in person to obtain a copy of the certificate.
Online marriage registration is already in place. The department registers marriages solemnised under the Special Marriage Act, 1954. It also registers marriages that took place earlier and are registered later. After the required process is completed, it issues the certificate.
Marriage registration has been done through the online system since May 27, 2023. As part of this process, certificates are generated digitally.
The latest integration takes these digital services further, as registered marriage certificates will now also be available on DigiLocker. Citizens can retrieve these documents online instead of depending only on a paper copy or on visiting the concerned office.
For couples who need a marriage certificate for government work and personal needs, the facility could make obtaining the document easier. It is also another step towards making government records available on digital platforms.
