The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will announce new guidelines tomorrow for swimming pools and vehicle-washing centres. The move follows reports that both are operating even though a 10 per cent water cut is in force in the city.
Standing Committee chairman Shrinath Bhimale has asked the administration to issue notices to these establishments and to act against those violating the rules.
The 10 per cent cut has been in force in Pune for about 15 days. It was imposed as a precaution in view of drought in several parts of Maharashtra and falling water stocks in dams. The corporation had earlier ordered pools and washing centres to shut, but citizens have said many are still open.
Bhimale said the administration must act on the complaints it has received. He has given officials strict instructions. The upcoming guidelines for pools and washing centres are meant to keep a close watch on how much water these places use. The PMC has said establishments that do not comply will face action.
Bhimale has also asked the administration to issue a directive that drinking water be used only for drinking and not for any other purpose.
The Standing Committee chairman has said earlier that corporation officials should visit these sites themselves and have those flouting the order shut down. The administration has also been asked to present a report on the matter at a Standing Committee meeting.
Meanwhile, residents are adjusting to the cut, planning their daily needs around one day each week. People say the savings will mean little if heavy water users carry on as before. They hope the PMC will also carry out regular inspections after the new rules.
