A Class 9 girl was allegedly stabbed by a classmate at VIBGYOR School in Balewadi, Pune, on Friday afternoon. The quarrel is said to have been over a video posted on social media during a school trip. The girl was injured and taken to hospital. Police have detained the boy accused of the attack.
The incident took place at about 2.15 pm on October 23, outside a classroom on the school premises. According to police, the students had gone on a trip to Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar in Satara district on October 17 and 18.
Police said that at a programme during the trip, the boy shared a video of the girls dancing on his social media account. The post led to an argument among the students, after which the boy deleted the video. Investigating officers suspect the quarrel may have continued after this. They are examining whether this led to the attack.
The injured girl's statement has been recorded. An officer from Bavdhan police station said her condition is stable.
VIBGYOR Group of Schools said it was deeply concerned by the incident and that its first focus is on the injured student and her family. The school has expelled the boy under its disciplinary rules. It has also started new checks, under which the bags of senior-class students are being searched more strictly. The school said these steps were taken to strengthen campus security after Friday's incident.
Police are trying to establish how the matter escalated to an attack, including the dispute over the social media video shared during the school trip. The investigation is continuing, and the boy is currently in police custody.
