A 24-year-old driver was shot with a country-made pistol and beaten with iron rods and sticks near Varangaon on Sunday evening; police are searching for the attackers.

A 24-year-old man was shot with a country-made pistol under the Fulgaon flyover near Varangaon town at about 7 pm on Sunday, November 1. Seven to eight unidentified attackers also beat him severely with an iron rod and sticks. The incident has caused alarm across the area.

The injured man is Sarfaraz Saiyyad Sakir Saiyyad, 24, a resident of Kazipura in Muktainagar. He was hit by bullets in the shoulder and abdomen, and suffered serious injuries to the head, hands and legs.

Sarfaraz works as a driver for a private company in Bhusawal. He is said to have got to know a young woman named Ashwini through Instagram about a month ago. On Sunday, as he was on his way home to Muktainagar, the two spoke on the phone and agreed to meet under the Fulgaon flyover.

As Sarfaraz waited there, seven or eight unidentified men came from behind and struck him on the head with a rod. When he fell, the attackers also hit him on the hands and legs. One of them then fired shots at his shoulder and abdomen with a country-made pistol. The attackers fled the spot after the attack.

Sarfaraz was rushed to the rural hospital in Varangaon, where Dr Govinda Beldar gave him initial treatment. The bullet in the abdomen was lodged deep, and an attempt to remove it was unsuccessful. He was then sent to the general hospital in Jalgaon for further treatment, where he is being treated.

On learning of the incident, Varangaon police reached the hospital and questioned the injured man. They then visited the spot. The sub-divisional police officer of Muktainagar also visited the scene and gave directions on the investigation.

On the injured man's complaint, a case has been registered against seven to eight unidentified persons under Sections 109(1), 118(2) and 189(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Section 3 of the Arms Act, 1959. Police are investigating to find the real reason for the attack and the identity of the accused. Police teams are searching for suspects.
