Maharashtra's weather may change again after Dussehra. Some parts of the state had heavy rain during Navratri, but several districts are now experiencing dry and warm weather. According to the India Meteorological Department's forecast, a yellow alert for rain has been issued for Sindhudurg and the Kolhapur ghat area on October 20.
Light to moderate showers are possible in parts of the Konkan and western Maharashtra. Most districts of north Maharashtra, Marathwada and Vidarbha are expected to stay dry. People are therefore watching where in the state it will rain and where the sun will bear down.
In the Konkan, Palghar, Thane, Mumbai and Raigad districts are likely to see mostly dry and warm weather on October 20. People in and around Mumbai may therefore suffer more from humidity than from rain. In Ratnagiri district, thunder with light showers is likely in some places.
Weather is likely to change in Sindhudurg district, where winds are expected to blow at 30 to 40 kmph. In view of the likely rain and winds, the weather department has issued a yellow alert for the area. People in the district need to heed local weather updates.
In north Maharashtra, the weather is likely to be dry in most places in Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon and Nashik districts. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 32 degrees Celsius. Light showers cannot be ruled out in parts of Jalgaon and Nashik. With little chance of rain, people here may have to face hot, dry weather. Farmers should also plan farm work after checking local forecasts.
In western Maharashtra, Pune and Ahilyanagar districts are expected to see mostly warm weather. Conditions could differ in Kolhapur district and the ghat area. A yellow alert for rain is in place there, and light to heavy showers are possible with thunder and strong winds. Wind speeds at the Kolhapur ghat are expected to be 40 to 50 kmph. Light to moderate rain is possible in parts of Satara and Sangli districts. The weather will thus not be uniform across western Maharashtra and will vary by district.
In Marathwada, light rain is expected in some places in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. Jalna, Parbhani, Beed, Hingoli, Nanded, Latur and Dharashiv districts will mostly stay dry. The maximum temperature here may be around 31 degrees Celsius. Many areas received little rain this year, so questions over farming and water arrangements remain. A changing climate and fluctuating temperatures could add to farmers' worries.
There is no specific rain warning for most districts of Vidarbha on October 20. Akola, Amravati, Nagpur, Wardha, Yavatmal, Buldhana, Washim, Bhandara, Gondia, Chandrapur and Gadchiroli areas are likely to stay mostly dry. The maximum temperature here may reach 35 to 36 degrees Celsius. People in Vidarbha may therefore face heat and a rising mercury. Care is needed when going out in the sun, especially in the afternoon.
Overall, rain is likely in parts of the state on October 20, but there are no signs of heavy rain across Maharashtra. The yellow alert for Sindhudurg and the Kolhapur ghat area will be the key one, and light to moderate showers are possible in some districts of the Konkan and western Maharashtra. Dry and warm weather is likely to continue in many other areas.
People should keep track of the weather department's latest updates. In areas under a rain warning, they should stay in a safe place during strong winds and thunder. In areas with warm weather, it is important to drink plenty of water and avoid the sun.
