Jagdish Asutkar, 36, was found dead inside the mine; early talk of a conveyor belt accident is being questioned as police await the post-mortem report.

A worker has died in suspicious circumstances in the underground coal mine at Patansaongi near Nagpur, causing alarm. The deceased was Jagdish Asutkar, 36. The actual cause of his death has become a serious question.

It was initially said that Jagdish was caught in a conveyor belt. However, it is being said that there were no clear marks of injuries on his body that would result from being caught in a belt. The oxygen level at the spot is also reported to be normal.

Jagdish was originally from Charurkhati village in Warora tehsil of Chandrapur district. He had been working in the Patansaongi coal mine for the past three years. He lived with his wife and two daughters in the residential colony within the mine premises.

On Thursday at around 12 noon, Jagdish's body was found about 200 metres inside the mine. He was brought out and taken to the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital of Western Coalfields Limited at Walni, where doctors declared him dead after examining him.

The most suspicious aspect of the case is that although it is being claimed he was caught in the belt, no clear injuries related to it were seen on the body. In addition, it has emerged that oxygen in the mine was normal. The reason given earlier is therefore being questioned.

Jagdish's relatives demanded that the exact cause of death be made clear and for some time refused to accept the body at the hospital. The body was then sent to Nagpur for post-mortem. Office-bearers of the CITU union are also expected to play an important role in the matter. All eyes are on what emerges about the mine management's safety arrangements.

Assistant Police Inspector Datta Kangule of Saoner police station visited the spot and inspected it. Police are now awaiting the post-mortem report, after which the exact cause of death is expected to become clear.

The death of a worker has once again heated up the issue of safety in underground coal mines. Questions are being raised over whether workers were being given the necessary safety equipment, whether safety rules were being strictly followed in the mine, and whether the claim of being caught in the conveyor belt is true. The mystery of Jagdish Asutkar's death will be resolved only after the post-mortem report and the police investigation.
