Vastu Shastra holds that mirrors on the north and east walls and facing the safe bring prosperity, while cracked mirrors and certain directions are best avoided.
Diwali will be celebrated this year on Sunday, November 8. The festival is regarded as a symbol of joy, light and prosperity. On this day, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha are worshipped in homes. It is a religious belief that performing the rituals during Diwali brings happiness and prosperity to the home and the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi.
The best time for Lakshmi puja will be from 5.54 pm to 7.50 pm. The auspicious time for the puja during Nishita Kaal will be from 11.39 pm to 12.31 am.
Cleaning and decorating the home carries special importance before Diwali. People clean every corner of the house and buy many new things as well. According to Vastu Shastra, the direction and placement of mirrors in the home are also considered very important. It is said that a mirror placed in certain spots helps spread positive energy, improves financial well-being and keeps happiness and prosperity in the home.
The first spot is the north wall. In Vastu Shastra, north is regarded as the direction of Kubera, the god of wealth, so placing a mirror there is considered auspicious. It is believed that a mirror on the north improves the financial situation and opens new avenues of income. Those who want to retain wealth and prosperity in the home may consider putting up a mirror on the north before Diwali.
The second spot is the east wall. East is considered the direction of the Sun and symbolises positive energy and new beginnings. According to Vastu, a mirror on this wall helps positivity stay in the home. It is believed that this increases joy, peace and harmony among family members. During Diwali cleaning, a clean, good mirror can be put up on the east wall.
The third spot is near the main door. The main entrance of a house is considered very important because energy enters the home through it. A mirror can be placed on the inner north or east wall near the main door. However, one should make sure it does not face the main door directly. Vastu Shastra says that if a mirror is directly opposite the door, the positive energy coming into the house can be reflected back out.
The fourth spot is opposite the safe or cupboard. The mirror should be placed so that it reflects the safe or cupboard. This is believed to increase wealth and prosperity. It is also said that when money is reflected in a mirror, prosperity in the home grows and the financial position becomes stronger.
While placing a mirror, its position should be considered along with direction, and certain mistakes should be avoided as per Vastu Shastra. Cracked, broken or cloudy mirrors should not be kept in the home, as they can increase negativity. Damaged mirrors should therefore be removed during Diwali cleaning.
If a mirror is put up in the bedroom, care should be taken that it does not reflect a sleeping person. This is considered inauspicious according to Vastu. Mirrors should also not be placed in the south, south-west and west directions. It is believed that this can upset the balance of energy in the home and increase mental stress or financial difficulties.
