According to Vastu Shastra, flour, turmeric, oil or ghee, salt and rice should be refilled before they finish, as empty containers are believed to bring ill fortune.

The kitchen is called the heart of the home. It is not merely a place to cook but also gives the whole family energy, happiness and good health. According to astrology and Vastu Shastra, the kitchen is the centre of happiness and prosperity, so some things connected with it call for particular care.

According to Vastu Shastra, five kitchen items should never be left empty. When they run out, it is said, the home does not merely attract negativity; the effect also falls on the family's finances. Here are the items that should not be allowed to run out.

The first is flour (atta). According to Vastu Shastra, the flour container in the kitchen should never be kept empty. It is believed that an empty flour container lowers the family's standing and increases mental stress. To keep the family prosperous, the container should be refilled with fresh flour before the flour finishes.

The second is turmeric. According to astrology, turmeric is linked to Jupiter (Guru), the planet of the gods, which is believed to bring good fortune and prosperity. Running out of turmeric in the kitchen is considered inauspicious. It is believed that a person's good fortune then declines and many obstacles arise in career and business. When the turmeric in the container begins to run low, it is advised to buy more from the market in advance.

The third is cooking oil or ghee. A shortage of cooking oil or ghee has been described as a sign of declining prosperity. Ghee is regarded as a symbol of Goddess Lakshmi. If it runs out completely, poverty may enter the home. It is therefore best to refill the vessel before the oil or ghee is completely finished.

The fourth is salt. It is said that salt is directly linked to the shadow planets Rahu and Ketu. According to Vastu Shastra, if the salt container becomes completely empty, negative energy enters the home. Obstacles also arise in any work or effort under way. Borrowing salt from others is likewise not considered right, as it may lead to financial difficulties.

The fifth is rice. Rice is linked to Venus (Shukra), which symbolises luxury, comfort and other material pleasures in life. If rice runs out in the kitchen, a Venus defect (Shukra dosha) may arise and the home may feel a shortage of money. It is therefore advised not to keep the rice container empty.
