Families often have many questions about safety before sending girls out of the house. A woman employee from Varanasi told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that this worry has begun to ease in her village. Families are now ready to send girls out for jobs, she said, and she pointed to a safe environment as the reason.

The woman thanked the Prime Minister for this. Smiling, Modi replied that she should then thank Yogiji. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was on the stage at the time.

Hearing the Prime Minister's reply, the woman smiled too and said, "Thank you, sir, thank you, sir, to everyone." The brief exchange, amid applause, brought together the Yogi government's efforts on women's safety and the growing trust in villages.

The Prime Minister had come to Varanasi to inaugurate a new unit of the Arvind garment company. After the inauguration, he spoke to the women working there. The women employees said the company had given them a chance at employment. They said the thinking of village families had also changed, and that families now want their daughters to step out of the house and find work.

The woman named the safety available at the workplace as a major reason for the change. She told the Prime Minister, "Sir, ever since this company started, people in the village have also become aware. People have started thinking that our daughter, too, should go out and work. So I thank this company from the heart. Because of this company, we are getting a chance to go out of the house and work, because there is a lot of security here. So our family members also..."

What stood out in the conversation was that the woman named no government scheme and cited no figures. Instead, she described the change she was seeing among families around her. When the Prime Minister named Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on the question of safety, the casual exchange became a notable moment of the event.

In Uttar Pradesh, women's safety has been among the government's main priorities since 2017 under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. An "Anti-Romeo Squad" was set up to curb harassment of women at schools, colleges and public places.

The "Mission Shakti" campaign has stressed linking women and girls with safety, dignity and self-reliance. Facilities such as women's help desks at police stations and "Pink Booths" at major public places have also been started. These steps are meant to make it easier to attend to women's complaints and to ensure they get help when needed.

According to the woman, as confidence in a safe environment builds, families are more ready than before to send their daughters out to work. At the new Arvind unit, local women are getting training along with jobs. Work close to home has opened new avenues of earning for women.

Her remarks also showed that a family's consent matters as much as getting a job. When girls get a chance at employment and families trust their safety, the path to self-reliance becomes easier.
