An investigation into an alleged sextortion plot in Nagpur has brought up the name of a man who failed Class 12 but described himself as a lawyer. The accused is Aditya Suresh Gupta. He is alleged to have planned to extort Rs 3 crore from an oil mill owner in Rajasthan, using a woman as the complainant to implicate the businessman in a sexual exploitation case.
Gupta is a resident of Agra in Uttar Pradesh. Police suspect that he flaunted political connections in Uttar Pradesh and presented himself as a helper of women facing sexual harassment. According to investigators, he had built this image on social media with great care.
It is alleged that because of this image, women who came to him for help trusted him. Police suspect he later used those women's information, contacts and personal circumstances in a large-scale blackmail racket. Investigators say he directed people to an app and used the contacts and information obtained through it. Objectionable material linked to the racket has also reportedly been found on his mobile phone, which could become key evidence in the investigation.
During questioning, Gupta allegedly admitted that he is not a lawyer and had failed the Class 12 examination. The gap between his claims and his actual education is being treated as an important part of the probe, to establish how he won people's trust.
The case of the Rajasthan oil mill owner is among the most serious charges against him. According to the investigation, Gupta arranged accommodation in Nagpur's Mominpura area for a woman from Chandrapur and used her to implicate the businessman in a sextortion case. On the woman's complaint, police arrested the businessman and he was sent to police custody.
Further investigation, however, raised doubts about the allegations against the businessman. Police suspect that Gupta, posing as the woman's well-wisher, was running the entire scheme himself, with the aim of extracting Rs 3 crore from the businessman. Police are now examining how the complaint was prepared, what role Gupta played in bringing the woman and the businessman together, and whether any conversations or money transactions support the extortion theory.
The case took a turn when Gupta allegedly offered Nagpur Police Rs 30 lakh to influence the investigation. It is alleged that this did not help him and instead brought closer scrutiny of his own actions, leading to his arrest. He has now been sent to Nagpur Central Jail. Police are also examining the circumstances in which the offer was made and whether it was directly linked to the oil mill owner's case.
Allegations have also surfaced about Gupta's own family. It is said that a few months ago, after a woman doctor died by suicide in Pune, her elderly parents and brother were facing legal trouble. During this time, Gupta allegedly took advantage of the family's absence from home and, with the help of an associate, stole cash and valuable jewellery from his own house. Investigators suspect he funded a lavish lifestyle with the proceeds. Police are also looking into the circumstances in which the items went missing and the associate's role.
Police are now going through the material recovered from Gupta's mobile phone to identify possible victims and link up different people. The app he used, his social media activity and his conversations will also be examined to find out whether women who sought help were later trapped in blackmail. Piecing together the Rajasthan businessman plot from the beginning and finding out who else was involved is a major task for police. The roles of the Chandrapur woman and the alleged associate in the theft at his home are also to be investigated further.
The arrest has opened up several alleged criminal links, but how large the racket was and what evidence stands behind each allegation will be determined in the investigation and court proceedings.
