Current affairs play a very important role in preparing for the UPSC examinations. Questions on what happens in the country and the world are asked in both the Preliminary and Main examinations. Many candidates are left wondering how far back they should read.

For those preparing for the Civil Services Examination, focusing on the current affairs of the past 12 to 18 months is generally considered beneficial. But this is not a fixed rule. Questions on older developments also appear in the examination, especially when they relate to subjects such as history, the Constitution, the economy, the environment or science.

For the Prelims, candidates should prepare the major events of at least the 12 months before the examination thoroughly. These should include government schemes, important reports, national and international events, and news related to the environment and science and technology.

For the Mains, merely memorising news is not enough. It is also necessary to understand the causes of an issue, its impact, the challenges and possible solutions. Candidates should therefore study the major events of 12 to 18 months topic-wise and relate them to the UPSC syllabus.

There are also some easy tips for studying current affairs. Read a newspaper every day, but stick to one reliable newspaper. Instead of noting down every report, capture only the information that is useful for the examination, and while reading, check which General Studies topic the report relates to.

Make short notes on important schemes, reports, government decisions and international events. This makes revision easier at exam time. At the end of every month, revise the news read during that month. Stick to one reliable source or set of notes so that time is not wasted reading repeatedly from different sources.

Candidates should also practise current affairs questions regularly. This will show which topics are well remembered and which parts need more work.

Now to the dates. The UPSC has released its annual examination calendar for 2027. According to it, the Civil Services Preliminary Examination will be held on May 23, 2027. The notification for the examination will be issued on January 13, 2027, and the last date for applications has been fixed as February 2, 2027. The Civil Services Main Examination will begin on August 20, 2027.
