No inspection of West Mumbai secondary schools in two years, RTI reply shows; complaint filed
Around 185 secondary schools from Bandra to Dahisar were allegedly not inspected in 2024-25 and 2025-26, according to information obtained under the RTI Act.
About 185 secondary schools in West Mumbai, from Bandra to Dahisar, were allegedly not inspected in the past two academic years, 2024-25 and 2025-26. The matter came to light through information obtained under the Right to Information (RTI) Act. Questions are now being raised about the functioning of the education department.
Rohit Dandwate, president of the Global Parents Teachers Association, has submitted a complaint to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and other concerned agencies. The complaint also points out that the necessary information on inspections of secondary schools in West Mumbai is not available.
Under the school code and government orders, education department officials are expected to inspect schools regularly. The complainants say an education inspector should inspect 10 to 15 schools a year and a deputy inspector 25 to 30 schools. They allege, however, that no school inspections were carried out during this period.
During inspections, checks on CCTV systems, toilets, the number of teaching and non-teaching staff, student attendance, physical facilities and the use of grants received by schools are important. Without inspections, questions arise about the condition of these facilities. For this reason, regular inspections are being demanded in the interest of students' safety.
The complainants have demanded action against Education Inspector (West) Sanjay Jawir and the deputy inspectors concerned. They have also sought a special inspection drive covering all the schools concerned within seven days. Attention now turns to the stand the education department takes on these allegations and what the official inspection records show.
