Nagpur: Two men who allegedly targeted an elderly man by offering him a ride in an e-rickshaw, and then stole his cash, have been arrested by the Ganeshpeth police. The e-rickshaw and the stolen money have been recovered from them.
According to the police, the two men approached the elderly man in an e-rickshaw and urged him to get in. When he refused, the accused changed tack. The one seated at the back quietly slipped a hand into the man's rear trouser pocket and took all the cash. Both then fled in the e-rickshaw. CCTV cameras in the area led the police to them, and they were arrested on the basis of the footage.
The accused have been identified as Kaushik Banerjee and Akash Mishra, both residents of Ganeshpeth.
The complainant, Dulichand Meshram, a resident of Bahadura, got off a bus on Mokshadham Ghat Chowk Road on the morning of October 30 to go to a homeopathic hospital, and was walking there when the two men noticed him. They asked him to sit in the e-rickshaw. When Meshram turned down the offer, the accused seated at the back put a hand into his rear trouser pocket and removed the cash in an instant. Both then sped away from the spot.
Meshram went to the Ganeshpeth police station and filed a complaint. Considering the seriousness of the matter, the police began an investigation and went through footage from CCTV cameras around the spot. A lead found in the footage led them to the two men, who were then arrested.
