Ganeshpeth police in Nagpur have arrested two men for allegedly taking cash from an elderly man's pocket and fleeing. According to police, the accused have been identified as Kaushik Banerjee and Akash Mishra, both residents of Ganeshpeth.
It is alleged that the e-rickshaw driver, along with his associate, lured the elderly man with an offer of a ride in the e-rickshaw, took the cash from his pocket and fled. Police have also recovered the e-rickshaw used in the crime and the stolen cash.
Police said Dulichand Lalaji Meshram, a resident of Bahadura, had set out on Friday morning to go to a homeopathic hospital. He got off a bus at Mokshdham Ghat Chowk Road and was walking towards the hospital.
At that point, the two accused approached him and asked him to sit in the e-rickshaw. The elderly man refused. It is alleged that meanwhile the accused seated at the back of the e-rickshaw put his hand into the back pocket of the man's trousers and took out all the cash in it. Both accused then fled the spot in the e-rickshaw.
After receiving a complaint, Ganeshpeth police registered a case and began an investigation. Police examined footage from CCTV cameras at and around the spot.
On the basis of technical investigation and the leads gathered, police identified the accused and arrested both. The e-rickshaw used in the crime and all of the stolen cash were recovered from them.
CCTV footage and technical investigation helped police reach the accused. Further investigation in the case is on.
