Nagpur Crime Branch Unit-2 arrested two men in Kapilnagar and seized three hydra cranes worth about Rs 20 lakh, allegedly run on fake plates.
A case of scrapped vehicles being passed off as roadworthy and run on the roads has come to light in Nagpur, the state's second capital. Nagpur Crime Branch Unit-2 has arrested two men in the Kapilnagar police station area. They are alleged to have used fake number plates and the registration numbers of other vehicles.
Police seized three hydra crane vehicles from the accused. The three are valued at about Rs 20 lakh in all. The case has raised serious questions about violations of vehicle registration and transport rules.
According to police, the accused were using JCB and hydra crane vehicles that had been scrapped in another state. They allegedly displayed the valid registration number of one vehicle on another and ran it on the roads. In other words, vehicles already declared scrap were allegedly being run on the identity of another vehicle.
It is stated that the vehicles were being driven openly on the roads despite the accused knowing they were scrap and unsafe. Rules on the transfer of vehicle ownership were also allegedly being violated.
Crime Branch Unit-2 had received a tip-off about the matter. Acting on it, the team raided the Kapilnagar police station area and seized the three hydra crane vehicles, valued at about Rs 20 lakh in all.
The arrested men are Firoz Alam and Ajgar Hussain. Both live in Yashodhara Nagar.
A case has been registered at Kapilnagar police station under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Motor Vehicles Act. Police are now examining the documents and registration numbers of the seized vehicles.
Police are also trying to establish how long the scrapped vehicles had been running on the roads on fake registration numbers. They are also looking into whether other vehicle owners, dealers or others were involved.
