A history-sheeter allegedly grabbed the collar of a constable on night patrol in Nagpur's Sakkardara area, slapped him and threatened to kill him.

A policeman on night patrol in the Sakkardara police station area of Nagpur was allegedly assaulted by a history-sheeter, who is also accused of abusing him and threatening to kill him. The accused is alleged to have grabbed the policeman's collar and slapped him on the ear.

The incident took place late on Thursday night. A police team was patrolling deserted areas and keeping watch on the movement of offenders with police records. Around midnight, when the accused was questioned about being at a deserted spot, he allegedly picked a quarrel with the policeman.

The accused has been identified as Pradeep Thakur, a resident of Sahkar Nagar. He is said to have a history of involvement in serious crimes.

According to police, Constable Sandeep Lolusare, attached to the investigation team of Sakkardara police station, was on night patrol with other policemen. The team saw Thakur behind a closed shop in the NIT complex, opposite Kamla Nehru College.

When Lolusare asked what he was doing at such a deserted place so late at night, Thakur allegedly flew into a rage. In anger he allegedly grabbed the policeman's collar and slapped him on the ear. He then allegedly abused the policeman in front of everyone and also threatened to kill him.

Raising a hand against a policeman in uniform not only insulted him but also obstructed government work. The incident has once again raised concern that habitual offenders have grown so bold that they directly challenge police authority.

Police sources said Thakur has a prior criminal record. Cases of murder, attempt to murder, assault and other serious offences are registered against him.

On the complaint of Constable Sandeep Lolusare, Sakkardara police have registered a case against Thakur under the relevant sections of law and begun further investigation.

The incident shows the risks policemen have to take while handling night patrol and law and order, especially when they face repeat offenders.
