The Tamil Nadu government has launched a scheme under which babies born in government hospitals will be given a gold ring. The scheme is called Thaimaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam, and it will be launched by the Tamil Nadu chief minister on September 28.
Under the scheme, babies born in government hospitals across the state will be given a gold ring weighing one gram. The scheme was originally meant to launch on September 15, the birth anniversary of former chief minister C. N. Annadurai, but was postponed because Chief Minister Vijay was on a visit to the UK. In the first phase, the Tamil Nadu government will distribute 1.28 lakh gold rings.
Every child born in a government hospital from June 22 was to get a one-gram gold ring under the scheme, and a government order to this effect was issued on June 23. According to a press note, around 7.8 lakh children are born in Tamil Nadu every year, of which 4.2 lakh, or 53 percent, are delivered in government hospitals. For the first phase, 1,28,000 gold rings have already been purchased.
Only mothers who are permanent residents of Tamil Nadu and who have registered under the Pregnancy and Child Tracking, or PICME, system to obtain an RCH ID will be eligible for the scheme. From September 28, babies born in government hospitals will be given the gold ring at the time of discharge.
Each ring will carry a unique serial number and will be packaged in a way that makes tampering or alteration difficult. For babies born from June 22, 2026, 100 gold rings will be distributed every day at 107 hub centres across the state. The scheme's benefit will go only to permanent residents of Tamil Nadu, with no bearing on other state governments or their citizens.
