Nandurbar district has received below-average rainfall this year, and drought-like conditions have developed there. To deal with the coming water shortage, Medical Education Minister and the district's guardian minister Hasan Mushrif has asked the administration to take up water conservation works that raise the groundwater level first.

A meeting chaired by Mushrif reviewed the drought situation in the district and the measures being taken. It took stock of rainfall, the Jal Jeevan Mission, the condition of farming, panchnamas of crops, fodder and employment works.

The average rainfall in Nandurbar district is 860.40 mm, but only 424.10 mm has fallen so far this year, which is 49 per cent of the average. By taluka, Akkalkuwa has recorded 39.70 per cent, Talode 40.60 per cent and Nandurbar taluka 41.40 per cent. The meeting asked that the necessary measures be implemented effectively in villages with low rainfall.

Mushrif said natural water sources and the groundwater level are falling because of the heat. Drinking water should therefore be planned properly from now, in view of the shortage ahead. Officials were told to begin planning for tankers, water storage and existing water sources from today. They were also asked to arrange tankers if needed and to plan the purchase of small tankers.

He made it clear that unauthorised drawing of water should be strictly banned and that every drop of the stored water should be used with care. Officials were also told that works taken up under the District Planning Development Fund should give special priority to water management and water conservation.

In the talukas where "Trigger-1" has been applied in the Kharif season 2026, panchnamas of crops destroyed by drought are to be completed first. Emphasis was laid on giving farmers the necessary help and water. Officials have also been directed to give priority to providing adequate fodder for animals during the drought.

To stop the migration of labourers, employment works are to be started on a large scale in each gram panchayat. Mushrif said works on water conservation, water storage and raising the groundwater level should be taken up under the Employment Guarantee Scheme so that as many labourers as possible get work.
