A special police squad on Saturday afternoon raided an alleged matka and betting den operating near a godown in Wadi, Nagpur. Nineteen people, including an alleged bookie, were arrested.

The raid was carried out near Maratha Savji Bhojnalaya. Assistant Police Inspector (API) Bhagwan Koli, who heads the special squad, was on patrol in the area at about 3 pm when an informer gave him a tip, and the action was taken on that information.

According to police, the tip said that Mushtaq Ishtiaq Ahmed was allegedly collecting money from people and running a satta-patti and matka gambling operation near the godown.

The police team reached the spot soon after receiving the information. It cordoned off the entire area and then raided the den. The raid caused panic among those present at the alleged gambling den.

Police detained 19 people in all. They include Mushtaq Ishtiaq Ahmed, 38, a resident of Sabley Layout in Wadi; Gautam Dhoke, 51, of Ambedkar Nagar; Vasant Gorewar, 70, of Shahu Layout in Dattawadi; and Satish Mehere, 22, of Tekdi in Wadi.

During the raid, police seized Rs 39,560 in cash. Material allegedly used in satta and matka gambling was also seized. Police have put the total value of the seized property at Rs 60,340.

Wadi police have registered a case against all the accused under Section 12(A) of the Maharashtra Prevention of Gambling Act. Further investigation is under way.

The operation was carried out by API Bhagwan Koli, PSI Satish Meshram and members of the special squad.
