Dattatray Vitthal Narle, who worked by day and studied at a night school, was found dead at home; Sanjaynagar police have registered a case.
An 18-year-old student appearing for the Class 12 examination died by suicide in Sangli city, distressed and depressed after a paper went badly. The deceased has been identified as Dattatray Vitthal Narle, a resident of Bhagat Plot, Laxminagar, Sakharkarkhana, Sangli. A case has been registered at Sanjaynagar police station, and a pall of gloom has settled over the area.
According to the information available, Dattatray was a hardworking boy. He worked during the day and was completing his education by studying at a night school. His Class 12 examinations were under way. A paper held in October had gone far more difficult than he expected, and for many days he had been under heavy stress and depression because of it.
On Friday evening, no one was at home. Dattatray hanged himself in the house. Some time later his mother returned home from work and found the door bolted from inside. She called out several times but got no answer. Panicking, she immediately called the neighbours.
With the neighbours' help, the door was broken open. Those present brought him down at once and took him without delay to the government Civil Hospital. Doctors said, however, that he had died before treatment could begin.
Dattatray was the family's only son. His mother was deeply shaken by the news. Weeping, she said, "Why take such a big step just because a paper went badly? I would have protected you from every trouble all your life, dear!" Her cry moved everyone present.
A team from Sanjaynagar police station reached the spot on receiving information about the incident. Police took the body into custody and conducted a panchnama. In the initial inquiry, family members told police that Dattatray took this step because of stress over his studies and the paper. Police are investigating the matter further.
