A sessions court in Pune has sentenced a young man to ten years' rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50,000 for attempting to murder a friend. District and Additional Sessions Judge K. D. Shirbhate held the accused guilty on the basis of the evidence before the court.

The convict is Kiran Shivaji Thorat, 28, a resident of Bhosari. He was accused of attempting to murder Abhishek Kamble. The incident took place in Bhosari on January 1, 2021.

The case arose from a quarrel over a woman friend. The accused and Abhishek had got to know each other through her about a month before the incident. Anger over the dispute about her had settled in Kiran's mind. He called Abhishek on the phone and summoned him.

The two were riding a motorcycle on Telco Road in Bhosari when Kiran made him stop the bike. As soon as it stopped, he held Abhishek's head and struck his neck with a sharp weapon. When people nearby began to approach, Kiran fled.

An autorickshaw driver rushed Abhishek to hospital, which saved his life. The incident had caused considerable alarm in the area.

Premkumar Agarwal argued the case for the prosecution. He said the accused had brought a sharp weapon with him, which showed he had made full preparations to kill. He said the neck is a vulnerable part of the body, so the intent was to murder Abhishek. The court accepted this argument.

The testimony of the doctors was also important. They said Abhishek would have died had he not received treatment in time.

The defence asked the court to reduce the sentence, saying the accused had recently married and his wife is pregnant. The court, however, said the crime was serious and therefore passed the stringent sentence.
