A woman was critically attacked with a knife late on Friday night in the Itwari vegetable market area of Nagpur. The area falls under the Tehsil police station limits. Her husband, a 37-year-old history-sheeter, is accused of the brutal attack. The incident is said to have followed an argument over suspicion about her character.

Police have named the accused as Ankush Pintu Bagadi. He is alleged to have stabbed his wife, Shruti. She has multiple wounds on her neck and other parts of her body. She was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where she is being treated. The accused fled the spot after the attack and remains absconding.

The incident took place at about 1.45 am on October 2. Ankush and Shruti are said to have argued over his suspicion about her character. According to police, Ankush is alleged to have beaten his wife on the same ground earlier as well.

The argument escalated late on Friday night, and Ankush is alleged to have picked up a knife and stabbed Shruti repeatedly. Police said the accused inflicted about 30 to 40 stab wounds on different parts of her body, including the neck.

The attack is alleged to have taken place in front of the couple's minor son and daughter, and both children are shaken. Ankush is said to have fled, leaving his critically injured wife where she lay.

The woman's minor son then phoned his maternal grandfather, Dhruv Upadhyay, and told him what had happened. Family members rushed to the spot and Tehsil police were also informed.

Police reached the spot and moved Shruti to GMCH for treatment. Doctors are monitoring her condition and the nature of her injuries.

The accused has 21 cases registered against him. According to police, Ankush Bagadi has a criminal record, with about 21 cases filed against him for offences such as robbery, assault and extortion.

Tehsil police have registered a case of attempt to murder against the accused and launched a manhunt. Police teams are raiding his possible hideouts. Police are also gathering information on the circumstances in which the attack took place. The investigation is on.
