A patient's mobile phone suddenly exploded and caught fire at an eye clinic in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. The incident took place at Drishti Clinic around noon on November 1. Nobody was hurt.
All the patients were seated in the clinic's waiting room at the time. One patient was sitting on a sofa, waiting for their turn to see the doctor, with a mobile phone in hand. The phone was switched on. The video initially shows everything as normal. Then smoke suddenly begins to rise from the phone, which then explodes and starts burning.
The most frightening aspect of the incident was that a woman was sitting right next to the sofa where the blast occurred, holding her newborn baby in her lap. As flames shot up with the blast, patients, small children and their relatives in the clinic ran outside to save themselves. For a while there was a stampede-like situation and fear spread everywhere.
The clinic staff acted quickly. Employees rushed over and poured water on the burning phone and the sofa. The fire was put out before it could spread. Because of the staff's alertness, the situation did not escalate. Nobody was killed or seriously injured.
The patient had also thrown the phone on the floor in time. Even so, everyone present was shaken by the blast. It is a relief that all those present, including the patient, the woman and the newborn, are safe.
The whole incident was captured on the clinic's CCTV camera. The video is going viral on social media. According to an initial estimate, the blast is feared to have been caused by the phone's battery overheating or by a technical fault.
