The Government Railway Police (GRP) in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, have arrested a B.Tech engineer for stealing passengers' belongings from AC coaches of long-distance trains. Police say he did it to fund his girlfriend's whims and demands.
The accused has been identified as Dilip Maurya. His father is currently serving in the Air Force.
According to the GRP, Maurya would pick passengers who looked wealthy. Once they fell asleep, he would take their bag and get off at whichever station came next. Police have seized 34 bags from him. The belongings in them are valued at about Rs 8.26 lakh.
Police said he travelled in AC coaches wearing good, expensive clothes so that other passengers would not suspect him. During the journey he watched the movements of fellow passengers. As soon as their attention strayed, he picked up a bag and got off at the next station.
During the investigation, a theft on the GT Express also came to light. Maurya was caught while police were examining the belongings of Deepak Sharma, a resident of Pragati Vihar in the Gola Ka Mandir area. His name is also surfacing in the theft of belongings of Vishakha Shashikant, a resident of Nagpur.
The GRP have seized all 34 bags from the accused. They include trolley bags, laptops, mobile phones and other expensive items, together worth about Rs 8.26 lakh.
According to Keerti Narwaria, a senior GRP police officer, the accused initially worked at a finance company. His circumstances changed after a financial loss, and he then began stealing.
Police are now trying to establish which trains' passengers he targeted and to whom the seized goods belong. The accused is being questioned closely. The GRP hope the interrogation will yield accurate information about the recovered goods and show how many more facts emerge in the case.
