An Anganwadi for two- to three-year-olds in Ward 10 of Ghugus council limits in Chandrapur district is alleged to be surrounded by weeds, garbage, stray animals and drug users.

The alleged poor condition of the area around an Anganwadi in Ward No. 10 of the Ghugus municipal council limits in Chandrapur district has raised questions about the safety of small children. Questions are also being raised about the arrangements made by the municipal council administration. The Anganwadi caters to children aged two to three years.

It is said that shrubs have grown around the Anganwadi, garbage lies about and stray animals roam the area. It is also alleged that anti-social elements and drug users gather in the locality. Concern has been expressed about the safety of children who attend the Anganwadi.

Small bushes and thick grass have spread in many places around the Anganwadi. It is claimed that in some spots the grass is so tall that small children may be hard to see. Garbage has piled up in several places, and there is a complaint that cattle and other stray animals roam the area.

The place is meant for children to play, sit and spend time in a safe environment. Its present state raises questions about cleanliness and upkeep.

Very young children attend the Anganwadi. Regular cleaning of the area, trimming of shrubs, proper disposal of garbage and safe access are therefore necessary. If the complaint about drug users loitering proves true, the matter becomes more serious.

Questions are also being raised about the role of the Ward 10 councillor, the woman councillor and local social workers. Elected representatives are expected to pay serious attention to problems of basic amenities, cleanliness and child safety in their ward.

An inquiry is being called for into how long the alleged neglect around the Anganwadi has continued. The demand to establish who is responsible, and what each person's accountability is, is also gaining weight.

It is observed that making videos on social media to show problems appears to have become a means of publicity for many leaders and elected representatives. But the real test of their work is not social media activity but solving problems on the ground. The alleged condition of the Ward 10 Anganwadi has brought this issue to the fore. Representatives who speak of a safe future for children should give the same attention to basic amenities in their ward.

Meena Morpaka, the party leader in the Ghugus municipal council, has sharply criticised the way the Ward 10 representatives work and questioned the safety of small children. She stressed that it is a serious matter to ignore the condition of an important place such as an Anganwadi serving children aged two to three. She said giving children a clean and safe environment should be everyone's first priority.

The question now being asked is when the municipal council administration will take firm steps to clean the area around the Anganwadi, trim the shrubs, dispose of the garbage and keep stray animals out. Residents are also watching what arrangements will be made for children's safety after the complaint about drug users gathering in the area is investigated.

It is hoped that the officials concerned will inspect the site immediately, make the area clean and safe, and take appropriate action against those responsible if negligence is found. Child safety is not a matter for political publicity but a basic responsibility of the administration and elected representatives. It remains to be seen whether the picture at the Ward 10 Anganwadi actually changes or the question of children's safety stays unanswered.
