Not clearing your stomach properly in the morning? Try these diet changes
Doctors say simple diet and lifestyle changes, from more fibre to fixed toilet timings, can ease morning constipation and indigestion.
Doctors consider it important for the stomach to be cleared properly after waking up in the morning, or the whole day can go by in sluggishness and discomfort. A buildup of waste in the intestines increases indigestion problems and starts affecting health. Eating too much spicy and low-fibre food regularly means food does not digest properly. Passing stool less often, very hard stools, having to strain, or feeling that the stomach has not been fully cleared even after passing stool are all considered symptoms of constipation.
If constipation is ignored for too long, the risk of developing piles increases later on. In other words, changes in everyday lifestyle start showing a direct effect on the body. Most people do not pay attention to the early symptoms of constipation, but over time the problem becomes serious. So, to avoid constipation and recurring indigestion, changes are needed in eating habits. It is advised to eat light, plain food rather than always eating spicy or oily food.
If there is a complaint of indigestion after eating anything, a change in diet is necessary. Foods such as fruits, vegetables, lentils, whole grains and salads give the body the fibre it needs. Eating fibre-rich food keeps intestinal movement normal and allows waste to pass out of the body easily. Eating too much refined flour, processed food or low-fibre food reduces the bulk and softness of stool, increasing problems such as difficulty passing stool, burning in the stomach and hard stools. So it is advised to drink as much water as possible.
When the body does not get enough water, the large intestine absorbs more water from the stool, which increases problems such as vomiting, nausea or indigestion. Drinking too little water through the day, sweating a lot, or vomiting and diarrhoea can cause water loss in the body. So one should drink plenty of water without waiting to feel thirsty, and also take cool items like buttermilk. Sitting for long periods through the day, not exercising and lack of physical activity also upset digestion.
To keep the stomach clear, changes in diet alone are not enough; daily habits also need to improve. Irregular sleep timing, stress and changes in routine directly affect digestion. So it is important to fix work timings, eat light and plain food, drink plenty of water, eat fruits and vegetables and stay physically active. One should develop the habit of passing stool at a fixed time every day, or waste keeps building up in the intestines, which can increase problems like vomiting and nausea.
