Shantinagar police have booked a 60-year-old man and his nephew, accused of taking a woman's Toyota Fortuner for Rs 50,000 and handing it to a third person without her consent.
A case of cheating has come to light in Nagpur, in which a woman was allegedly defrauded in the name of settling an old dispute over a past transaction. Riyaz Khan, 60, and an associate are accused of taking over a Toyota Fortuner registered in the woman's name, worth about Rs 5 lakh, and paying only Rs 50,000 for it, keeping the rest of the amount, the allegation says.
It is further alleged that the vehicle was handed over to a third person without the woman's permission. It has also come to light that the Fortuner was used in a crime registered within the limits of Khaparkheda police station. The entire episode is said to have taken place in Nagpur city.
The case falls within the limits of Shantinagar police station. According to the complaint, about four years ago a deal over scrap material had been agreed between the woman's husband and the accused, Riyaz Khan. The deal was cancelled after a dispute over the exchange of money.
Riyaz Khan was subsequently said to be demanding compensation from the woman's husband for the expenses incurred in that deal. The woman's Fortuner was taken in the name of settling this old dispute. The complaint thus indicates that even four years after the deal was cancelled, its accounts ended up being settled against this vehicle.
According to the allegations, the woman trusted Riyaz Khan and handed over the Toyota Fortuner registered in her name. The vehicle's value is stated to be about Rs 5 lakh, but he paid only Rs 50,000 for it. Without paying the balance, Riyaz Khan, together with his nephew, aged about 40, allegedly handed the vehicle, without the woman's permission, to Parmanand Moryani, a resident of Pachpaoli.
The complaint also states that the Fortuner, registered in the woman's name, was used in a crime within the limits of Khaparkheda police station. Meanwhile, the vehicle's instalments were not paid and the outstanding amount was not cleared, causing the woman financial loss.
On the woman's complaint, Shantinagar police have registered a case under the relevant sections on cheating against Riyaz Khan and his nephew, aged about 40. Police are now investigating the entire transaction, the handing over of the vehicle to a third person, and its alleged use in a crime.
The full truth of how a vehicle given in trust became an instrument of fraud will emerge only after the police investigation.
