The long wait for people and traders in Nagpur, the winter capital of Maharashtra, is finally over. The Panchpavli-Dighori flyover, counted among the city's most important traffic projects, has been opened to traffic, bringing relief to lakhs of people.

The flyover connects central Nagpur with eastern Nagpur. With it open, travel on this route is now easier, safer and faster. Vehicles heading from Ashok Chowk and Panchpavli towards Jaripatka and nearby areas will no longer have to battle the heavy traffic that used to build up on the road below. Motorists can now reach their destination in a few minutes without any signals or hold-ups by taking the flyover directly, saving both time and fuel. The city's busiest route has, in effect, been given a new lease of life.

But while the flyover has solved a major traffic problem, it has created a new worry for traders doing business on the main road below. During construction, a divider about 10 feet wide was built down the middle of the main road, considerably reducing its width. As a result, only about 12 to 15 feet of road space is now left in front of the shops, making it very difficult for customers visiting the market to park their vehicles.

Jawahar Patel, former president of The Electrical Merchants Association, Gandhibagh, says the flyover will certainly bring relief, but the divider has left so little space that customers will not be able to park their vehicles at all, which will directly hit their business. He says that alongside the benefits of the flyover, a firm and practical solution to this new parking problem should be found soon so that business in the market is not affected.

Trader Rahul Gupta says traffic in the entire area had been completely disrupted for the past several years during the flyover's construction. A kilometre-long traffic jam every morning and evening had become routine, leaving ambulances, school buses and ordinary people stuck for hours. The opening of the flyover will now bring relief from this. The area adjoining Panchpavli, Gandhibagh and Itwari is considered the city's biggest and most important business hub.

Local trader associations, shopkeepers and customers visiting the area say the 10-foot divider should be redesigned and its width reduced. There have also been demands for pay-and-park facilities or multi-level parking to be set up soon on vacant government plots nearby or close to the main road. Traders have also appealed to the administration to fix a separate time slot for loading and unloading goods during peak hours, so that along with the gift of the flyover, a concrete solution to the parking problem can also be found soon, allowing both the city's development and its trade to move forward together.

Trader Arjundas Ahuja says thousands of traders and customers come to shop every day in the markets connected to this flyover, not just from Nagpur city but from across Vidarbha and nearby areas. Heavy traffic jams during construction had significantly reduced the number of outside customers visiting this market. With the flyover now open, pressure on the road will ease, making it easier again for traders from rural areas to come to this market.
