Reckless riding by some minors on motorcycles on the roads of Rajura town in Chandrapur district has raised concerns over public safety. Speeding, triple riding, blaring ear-splitting horns and performing stunts on the road are on the rise, and residents fear a major accident.

Residents say the problem is worst on the stretch from Shivaji School to the bus station. After schools and colleges let out, such behaviour becomes common on this route.

Some students ride fast with no regard for traffic rules, endangering pedestrians and other motorists. Triple riding carries the risk of losing control of the bike, yet many are seen riding carelessly. In one such case, a young man suffered a serious injury and a fracture to his right hand, it has emerged.

Another violation is also visible. Some bikes have a photo or picture fixed in place of the official number plate. A number plate is essential to identify a vehicle, and residents are asking why such things are being overlooked.

Residents also say that parents who hand motorcycles to minor children should take the situation seriously. Merely telling children the traffic rules will not do; they must actually be followed. There is a demand for regular checks and strict action against those riding without a licence, riding triple, using non-compliant number plates and performing stunts.

Angry citizens are asking whether the administration will wake up only after a major accident in the city. They expect the police and the traffic department to launch a special drive immediately and rein in unruly riders to prevent accidents.

Rajura police station in-charge Nitin Chincholkar said a special drive would be run to stop stunt riding in the city and strict action would be taken against those performing stunts. He appealed to citizens to inform the police about such behaviour. He also asked parents not to give vehicles to minor children.
