Mahanagar Gas Limited has raised CNG prices in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region by Rs 1 a kg, citing the West Asia conflict, higher gas purchase costs and cuts in domestic gas allocation.
Motorists in Mumbai and surrounding areas face another price rise at the pump. Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has increased the price of CNG by Rs 1 per kg, taking it to Rs 90 per kg from November 1, 2026.
According to a statement issued by MGL, CNG in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region has gone up from Rs 89 to Rs 90 per kg. The new rates came into effect from midnight on October 31.
The company has also given the main reasons for the increase. It cited the West Asia conflict, higher gas purchase costs and a cut in the allocation of domestically produced gas. MGL said the conflict in West Asia has affected natural gas supplies and prices. The conflict involving the US, Israel and Iran disrupted oil and gas supplies and raised the company's input gas costs.
The company also said the allocation of domestically produced natural gas has been cut and dependence on imported regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) is growing. These factors also affected costs. According to MGL, changes linked to international market prices are making gas purchases costlier. The company said the aim of the increase is to recover part of the higher costs and to keep supplying CNG to customers without interruption.
The increase may affect about 12.93 lakh vehicles that receive CNG from MGL in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. These include auto-rickshaws, taxis and private vehicles, as well as vehicles of the state government's and municipal corporations' public transport services. CNG is widely used in both public and private vehicles, so the impact will not be limited to private vehicle owners and may also hit the daily expenses of rickshaw and taxi drivers.
Rickshaw and taxi drivers will spend more on fuel. Whether fares will rise depends on the relevant rules and decisions, so it is not yet clear how much passengers will immediately have to pay more.
CNG prices have risen repeatedly over the past few months. MGL had earlier raised the price by Rs 1 to Rs 89 per kg from October 1. Before that, there was an increase of Rs 2 per kg in September. In May, the company had set the CNG price at Rs 86 per kg and the piped natural gas (PNG) price at Rs 52 per standard cubic metre (SCM).
Efforts are under way to increase the use of CNG as a clean fuel, but rising purchase costs are forcing price increases. MGL said it will continue to explore different options to reduce its gas purchase costs.
