MG Motor India has discontinued its mid-size SUV, the MG Astor, in India, according to reports. The car is still listed on the company's official website, but dealer sources say its sales have been stopped.

MG launched the Astor in the Indian market in 2021. It competed directly with the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq. The car looked attractive and was loaded with features, but after a few years of effort it failed to gain a hold in the market.

Reports say the SUV's average monthly sales between September 2025 and September 2026 were only 112 units. The biggest reason cited for the low sales is the limited choice of engines. Rival models offered petrol, diesel, CNG and hybrid options, while the Astor came only with a petrol engine.

The company had already discontinued its turbo engine in February 2025. After that, customers were left with only the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine. The car's crossover-like design also failed to attract many Indian customers.

The question now is what the company will do next. MG Motor is reported not to be exiting the mid-size SUV segment entirely. The company is preparing to return to the segment with new and strong changes. According to sources, MG will bring a replacement for the Astor, a new model, to the market.

The new SUV will be built on the company's SIGMA (SAIC Intelligent Global Modular Architecture) platform. The platform can support three kinds of powertrain: internal combustion engine (ICE), hybrid and electric. The company will thus fully address the shortage of engine options that the old Astor had. According to the information available, the new SUV replacing the Astor could be launched in the Indian market in 2027.
